Pongyang has cut off the last key channel of communication with the Republic of Korea amid high tensions on the Korean peninsula. A DPRK military communications liaison officer notified the RoK of the decision several minutes before a loss of signal. Previously, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the DPRK sent the notice to South Korea at 11:20 a.m. KCNA quoted a military spokesman as saying “In a situation where a war may break out at any moment, there is no need to keep the north-south military communications set up between the militaries of both sides”. The cut-off of the inter-Korean military hotline may affect the operations of the Kaesong joint industrial park. The Kaesong industrial park has continued its operation despite the heightened tension.
