On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart John Kerry agreed in a phone conversation that fighting near the crash site in eastern Ukraine needs to be stopped.

They also agreed on the need for serious implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2166 requiring an international independent investigation into the crash and an end to fighting in the area.
