After Mr. Biden won the US presidential election on November 3, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that Cuba believes "in the possibility of a constructive bilateral relationship that respects differences."

When Mr. Biden served as Vice President of the Barack Obama administration, the US and Cuba saw their ties improved.

But since taking office in January 2017, President Donald Trump pushed these relations almost back to the Cold War by tightening economic sanctions on Cuba, reversing all efforts to thaw relations with the Caribbean island nation.
