Coronavirus pandemic slows down in Spain

(VOVWORLD) - The spread of the coronavirus is slowing down in Spain, Health Minister Salvador Illa said in a televised press conference on Monday.

Spain has confirmed more than 85,000 coronavirus cases and more than 7,300 deaths. However, the past two days have seen a fall in the number of new cases, from more than 8,100 new cases on Saturday, to more than 6,500 and 6,300 on Sunday and Monday. This slowdown roughly coincides with the first two weeks of the lockdown ordered by the Spanish government on March 14.

Italy's Minister of Health Roberto Speranza told reporters Monday the nationwide coronavirus lockdown in place would be extended until at least April 12, nine days beyond its original deadline. A day earlier, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told Italians to prepare themselves for a very long lockdown that would be lifted gradually as the intensity of the outbreak in Italy weakens.

Japan on Tuesday raised its travel advisory for some 50 countries including the United States, China and South Korea to level 3, warning against any trips to these areas as the novel coronavirus continues to spread globally.
