Around 50,000 delegates are expected to attend a series of discussions over the two-week conference, with the challenging task of safeguarding global climate cooperation.

Speaking at the opening session, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva affirmed that climate change is no longer a threat of the future but a tragedy of the present. He also criticized arguments that deny scientific evidence of climate change, emphasizing that the cost of protecting the climate is far lower than the cost of wars.
