During the talk, President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to promoting peace talks to end the conflict in Ukraine. He also welcomed continued US–Russia engagement, improved bilateral relations, and efforts to advance a political solution to the Russian-Ukraine conflict.
For his part, President Putin updated President Xi on the latest negotiations between Russia and the United States regarding the conflict, including the main outcomes of his August 6 meeting with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. President Xi expressed support for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
The two leaders also discussed bilateral and international issues, including preparations for President Putin’s upcoming visit to China. According to the plan, President Xi and President Putin are expected to meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and attend several events from August 31 to September 3, including a comprehensive bilateral meeting on September 2.
