During their meeting in Beijing, Xi said he hopes the United States will work to maintain the stability of bilateral relations and, on that basis, improve and take forward the relationship.

According to President Xi, in this changing and turbulent world, countries need solidarity and coordination, not division or confrontation. “As two major countries, China and the United States should be responsible for history, for the people, and for the world, and should be a source of stability for world peace and a propeller for common development,” he said.

President Xi expressed his hope that the US will “see each other’s development as an opportunity rather than a challenge, work with China to find a right way for China and the United States to coexist in peace and achieve common development on this planet.”

The White House said the meeting aimed to keep communication open and responsibly manage US-China relations. They discussed fulfilling commitments made by President Xi and President Biden last November, such as cooperating on counter-narcotics, military communication, and AI safety. They also talked about the Taiwan Strait, the Ukraine conflict, and the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam).
