(VOVworld) – Improving healthcare services is the responsibility and honor of health workers, said President Truong Tan Sang at a ceremony marking the 59th Vietnamese Physicians’ Day in Hanoi on Thursday.

The ceremony briefed participants on Vietnam’s medical achievements since a letter sent by late President Ho Chi Minh 59 years ago to the health sector encouraged every doctor to be like a tender mother. Generations of Vietnamese physicians have endured hardship in both wartime and peacetime to take care of their patients.

Sang said at the ceremony that the development of the health sector in the new period, advocated by the 11th National Party Congress, is a task of the sector, the party, and the people.

He said: “The sector should improve it services at all levels. In addition to the state investment, the sector should mobilize more private capital and develop private medical clinics. I’d like to call for stricter management of services and medical ethics, financial mechanism reform, and more preferential health insurance and health services for children, the elderly, the poor, and policy beneficiaries. Modern medicine combined with traditional therapies will help Vietnam’s health sector walk on a par with other advanced health sectors.”

Sang took the occasion to confer the title of People’s Physician on 67 health workers.
