(VOVworld) - Celebrations are underway worldwide to mark the 71st anniversary of the victory over fascism on May 9th.

On Thursday, a parade took place in Moldova’s capital city of Chisinau which concluded with the laying of floral wreaths at the memorial to Soviet soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the war to liberate Europe from fascists. Hundreds of thousands of Moldovans laid wreaths at monuments to honor those who died during the Soviet Union’s great struggle.
A get-together was held at the headquarters of the Romanian parliament to mark the event and remember victims of the Jewish genocide. Representatives from the communities of Russians, Jewish in Romania, and Romanian veterans association attended the meeting.
In Poland, an exhibit featuring Nazi crimes and the Soviet army’s mission in Europe opened. The exhibit narrates major events of the final year of World War II in which more than 1 million people died to liberate 11 countries from fascism. It also documents the Soviet Union’s strong support for central and eastern European nations in their post-war rebuilding process.
The Russian Consulate General in New York hosted a gathering of war veterans from member states of the former Soviet Union and representatives of the association of former prisoners of Nazi concentration camps.
