In his opening speech on Monday, Lula urged nations to make bold political commitments to combat poverty. The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty has been joined by 81 countries including 18 of the 19 G20 nations.

The alliance, supported by the European Union and the African Union, along with financial institutions and NGOs, now has 147 signatories. This ambitious initiative seeks to reduce world hunger, which affected 733 million people last year, 9% of the world’s population.

President Da Silva emphasized that these challenges stem from political choices. He also highlighted the impact of climate change and called on world leaders to take decisive action.
