During the ten-day meeting, delegates will prepare for the next UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which will take place in November in Baku, Azerbaijan. Since 2009 the target has been for industrialized countries to provide poorer countries with 100 billion USD in annual support. This target was reaffirmed in the 2015 Paris Agreement and extended to 2025. The question now is what will happen after 2025.
Bertha Argueta, Senior Advisor with Germanwatch, emphasized the importance of the Bonn negotiations. Time is critical and the world can’t afford to leave any crucial questions unanswered for the upcoming COP29 Conference, she said, adding that during this preparatory meeting, countries must work to bridge their differences and pinpoint realistic shared objectives.
