The Ministers agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to strongly impact socio-economy in the long-term, therefore cooperation between ASEAN and its partners is vital.

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said: “I’m proud of the way our nations cooperate in difficult time. I want you to know that the US continues to help lead the world’s recovery. We pledge 87 billion USD to assist ASEAN countries, as part of billions of USD we’ve provided worldwide. I want to take this opportunity to mark the 5th anniversary of ASEAN-US Strategic partnership, our vision for the future of the Indo-Pacific, one that is open, free, and pluralistic.”

At the ASEAN-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, both sides acknowledged their cooperation progress including the completion of the ASEAN-Canada Action Plan 2016-2020.

The ministers shared the view that countries need to enhance dialogues and build trust in settling regional security and stability.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said: “Canada has consistently supported ASEAN’s role and efforts in maintaining and promoting peace, stability, maritime security, and freedom of navigation in and over flight above the South China Sea. That principal position of ASEAN remains unchanged and was reiterated by the ASEAN leaders at the recent 36th ASEAN summit. ASEAN reaffirms the importance of upholding international law including the 1982 UNCLOS and the importance of enhancing mutual trust and confidence, non-militarization, self-restraint in the conduct of all activities.”
