(VOVworld) – The Conference of ASEAN Journalists (CAJ) issued a statement last week expressing concern over China’s aggression in the East Sea. The statement said China’s continued aggressive actions in the East Sea and East China Sea have become a serious concern for all peace-loving people everywhere, and in particular to the people of Southeast Asia. China’s actions have seriously damaged its relationship with two CAJ members, the Philippines and Vietnam. The statement described China’s actions as “bullying” because, clearly, China is using its economic and military might against its weak and smaller neighbors to back up its territorial claims without regard to historical tradition and facts or to the long, peaceful relationship between China and Southeast Asian nations.

The CAJ urged China, as a leading UN member, to demonstrate its leadership through respecting territorial integrity of its neighbors, respecting international law, and acknowledging the importance of international arbitration in settling disputes.

The statement urged journalists worldwide to exert their efforts to educate the public about the importance of mutual respect. It asked China to return to negotiations and reminded China that the policy it is pursuing will not win greater respect but only greater suspicion that may isolate China in the world arena.
