ASEAN commits to building a resilient, inclusive, people-centered community

(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations (UN) General Assembly Committee opened its 78th session on Thursday in New York to tackle social development issues.

Social development is a top priority for ASEAN, said Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of Vietnam's Permanent Delegation to the UN on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He stressed that ASEAN is committed to building a resilient, inclusive and people-centered community, and effectively implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ambassador Giang highlighted ASEAN's advancements in economic development and improvement of people's life quality. 

ASEAN has also implemented several initiatives based on its frameworks for regional cooperation, including the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Social Welfare and Development, the Regional Framework and Action Plan to Implement the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Social Protection, ASEAN Declaration on Gender Equality and Family Development, and the ASEAN Committee on Women (ACW) Work Plan 2021–2025.

Representing Vietnam at the session, Minister Counsellor Le Thi Minh Thoa, Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Delegation to the UN, stressed that Vietnam always put people as the subject, the goal, and the main driver in all of its development policies.

She reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to promoting social development, ensuring the rights of the people, and promoting cooperation with other countries and partners to ensure that no one is left behind.
