Nguyen Quang Tam, a former consultant to the National Defense Ministry, said: "When Khe Sanh town was liberated, the local citizens were poor and illiterate. The district authorities worked toward poverty reduction by reclaiming land for wet rice cultivation, and planting cassava, sweet potatoes, coffee, pepper, and bananas. People were also encouraged to raise cows and pigs. So their living conditions have gradually improved".

After the ceremony came a firework display to celebrate the historic victory.
