(VOVworld) – A workshop opened in Soc Trang province on Wednesday to discuss agriculture restructuring, new rural development and climate change adaptation in the Mekong River delta. Delegates proposed special mechanisms and policies suitable to the region in order to achieve sustainable agricultural growth, increase product quality and added value, ensure food security, and boost exports. They agreed that it was essential to develop coastal mangrove forests and build sea dikes and irrigation infrastructure to develop aquaculture.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said: “It’s important to combine new rural development with agriculture restructuring with a focus on research and science application. Programs to support the production of highly competitive products are also needed.”
