(VOVworld) - Afghanistan’s presidential election may face a run-off, as the latest tally of ballots showed none of the two leading candidates securing an outright majority, said the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on Thursday. Preliminary results of 82.6% of the votes counted in 34 provinces show former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah is currently taking the lead with 43,8%, followed by former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani with 32,9% and Zahmai Rassoul with 11,1 %. IEC chairman Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani told a news conference in Kabul that with the 17.5 percent of the votes that are going to be counted, it is doubtful that anyone will win in the first round. The final results are due on May 14 and if necessary, a 2nd round of voting between two top candidates will be conducted by the end of May.
