Abu Dhabi picked as headquarters for European naval mission to Gulf

(VOVWORLD) - France’s Defense Minister Florence Parly said on Sunday that a French naval base in Abu Dhabi will serve as the headquarters for a European-led mission to protect Gulf waters that will be operational soon.

The headquarters will be run by 10 to 15 staff members deployed at the French base, who will contribute to making maritime navigation in the Gulf as safe as possible.

France and the UAE share strong ties, which led to the opening in 2009 of the first French military base outside Africa, where 700 personnel are stationed permanently.
