300 Sri Lankans rescued from distressed ship in stable condition, says spokesperson

(VOVWORLD) -All the people on board a ship in distress in Vietnamese waters, who were rescued by a Japanese ship and supported by a Vietnamese ship to bring them ashore on Tuesday evening, are now in stable condition and have been arranged to rest by local authorities, according to the Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Le Thi Thu Hang on Tuesday responded to a reporter's question about the rescue of more than 300 Sri Lankan nationals aboard the LADY R3 ship in Vietnamese waters. She said that on Monday afternoon, immediately after receiving information that the Myanmar-flagged ship got into trouble in very bad weather and in the waters about 258 nautical miles off the southeastern part of the Vung Tau cape, the competent forces at sea in Vietnam issued maritime notices and notified vessels near the ship's accident area to take supportive measures.  

Immediately after being informed of the accident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Sri Lankan Embassy in Hanoi and is coordinating very closely with a number of international organizations, relevant agencies, and Ba Ria-Vung province for humanitarian assistance measures in accordance with Vietnamese law and international practices, the spokesperson said.
