The UK, Canada, France, Germany, and Australia were among the mainly wealthy developed economies to sign the voluntary pledge in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The pledge commits them to submit national climate plans early next year that show no new unabated coal, which is coal burned without any measures such as carbon capture and storage to reduce its emissions.
At COP29, rich countries have been urged to pledge up to 900 billion USD per year to help poorer nations take action against climate change. Developing nations called on developed nations to help pay for their green transition and offset the devastating costs of climate change.
