(VOVWORLD) - Democratic candidate Joe Biden moved closer to claiming the White House on Friday with 264 electoral votes while President Donald Trump had 214.

Biden has taken the lead in Pennsylvania and Georgia with a total of 36 electoral votes, bringing Biden very close to winning the White House. He now only needs 6 more votes to declare victory. The six electoral votes in Nevada, which Hillary Clinton narrowly won four years ago, could prove decisive, making Biden the US's 46th president.

Election officials in Georgia announced a recount on Friday after the presidential race was deemed “too close to call” in that state. Pennsylvania is expected to soon release more results on their vote count as tens of thousands of mail-ins are being processed.

President Trump and his campaign have filed lawsuits to temporarily halt the count alleging its monitors had been kept too far away and could not meaningfully observe the process. He twitted on Friday that the votes coming after the election day are illegal and that he hopes this will be determined by the Supreme Court.
