People in Hue wrap Chung cakes for family reunion

(VOVWORLD) -In recent years people from the central province of Thua Thien-Hue have revived their tradition of cooking Banh Chung (square glutinous rice cake) and Banh Tet (round glutinous rice cake) as families reunite to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Poet and journalist Lang Hien Xuan considers wrapping Banh Chung (or Chung cakes) as a way to bring all people closer together every Tet.

All children and adults join to help wrapping Chung cakes, they learn to prepare key materials, including large green leaves known as dong (phrynium placentarium),

pork meat,

rice,

and mung beans.

People wrap Banh Tet (round glutinous rice cake) as a way to gather family working together to prepare a warm and happy Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Enjoying a sleepless night cooking Banh Chung and Banh Tet, and sharing old stories about years past is a traditional way to welcome a lunar New Year.
