Situated roughly 12 kilometres from the former imperial city of Hue, Ru Cha mangrove forest is nestled in Tam Giang Lagoon, a major tourist attraction in Thua Thien-Hue province. In the local dialect, Rú means forest, while Chá is the name of the trees which grow densely in the forest. A peaceful scene can be viewed at dawn in Ru Cha mangrove forest. When fall comes, leaves of Chá trees (excoecaria agallocha) fall which makes the forest expose its untouched and romantic natural beauty. An observatory is erected in the heart of the forest, allowing visitors to admire the panoramic views of the surrounding green spaces and Tam Giang Lagoon. The main function of the Ru Cha primitive mangrove forest is to prevent salinity and protect aquatic resources. Tourists sail a boat in order to watch the rich flora of the forest. People mainly earn a living by going fishing in Ru Cha forest. From high above, Ru Cha looks like a multi-coloured painting made from various kinds of leaves. The Thua Thien-Hue provincial administration plans to further expand the five-hectare forest in a bid to reduce the impact of climate change whilst developing eco-tourism in the future.
