A: First of all, we would like to welcome Sven Partzsh of Singapore to our program. Sven sent us a beautiful postcard of Singapore and wrote: “I really enjoyed listening to your program. I visited Vietnam a couple of times and went to Ho Chi Minh city, Hai Phong, Hanoi and Vung Tau. It is an exciting country”.

A: Jayanta Chakrabarty of India in an email to us this week wrote: “The Letter Box program of the Voice of Vietnam, English Service is one of my family’s favorite programs. It not only makes us acquainted with your worldwide listeners, but also gives us a glimpse of insight into Vietnam as listeners’ queries and questions are answered comprehensively in the Letter Box program. It is also nicely presented with friendly voices and much warmth”.
B: Thank you Jayanta for your very nice comments. Jayanta continued: “Browsing over the archives of the VOV website, the Letter Box on Wednesday August 28, 2013 was of special interest to me. The topic of stamp collecting, which is one of my hobbies that I have cultivated since my childhood days, was discussed. I was glad to know that stamp collecting is a hobby of young and old in Vietnam. I send my fellow stamp collectors in your country my good wishes”.
A: Jayanta reported listening to our programs on October 10, 12, and 13 via the Internet. This week, we also received a letter from David Teall of Durham, England, who is a member of the British Radio Society. David wrote: “I used to be a shortwave listener some years ago but a long illness stopped me from listening to shortwave. I’m very glad to be back again, so keep up the good work. Even though we are into the 9th month of this year, may I simply wish you all at Voice of Vietnam all the best in the remainder of 2013”.
B: Thank you, David, for your best wishes. David, we really like your postcard of Whitby. The scenery in the postcard is very green and impressive, green rocks by a blue sea, piers and beautiful houses nestled among colorful flowers.

A: In regard to your reception report, we would like you to check again the program content on September 18 about VOV’s 50 years of broadcasting. In fact, VOV has broadcast for 68 years. On September 2nd, 1945, a special live radio broadcast was made at Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square where President Ho Chi Minh read Vietnam Declaration of Independence proclaiming the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
B: Though it was a trial broadcast, it marked the advent of Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) five days later. “This is the Voice of Vietnam broadcasting from Hanoi, the Capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam”. That announcement was broadcast at 11:30 on September 7, 1945, an historical moment that announced the birth of Radio the Voice of Vietnam. Our English Program was one of the programs launched that day.
A: In the last 68 years, VOV has continued its role as an important revolutionary media organization of the Party and the State. Operating in 4 formats: radio, TV, print, and online, VOV offers listeners alternative information sources. The establishment of VOV’s TV channel, traffic information channel, online newspaper and the website of the Overseas Service has demonstrated the organization’s steady development over the years.
A: This week, we got a letter from Ingmar Larsson of Sweden, who listened to our program on September 11 on a frequency of 9625 with SINPO rated all 5s. Ingmar says he hoped to get his reception report confirmed. Ingmar, we have checked your report, which was precise and detailed. We will verify it with a QSL card soon.
B: From Bangladesh, Ashik Eqbal Tokon sent us an email expressing his thanks to VOV. Ashik wrote: “In a Letter Box edition on July 31st of this year, you disclosed that the lotus is proposed as your national flower. Your last Letter Box gave us some more information about this graceful flower. I can’t resist mentioning that the Lotus is also a very common flower in Bangladesh. It’s also the national flower of India but in Bangladesh, the water lily is the national flower. But the Lotus is used in various ways in our life, culture and tradition. It is used to worship Goddess Durga in Hinduism, also. Our countrymen even use parts of the lotus and water lily as food. Roots, bulbs, seeds, and even stalks are used as food. Long live the lotus”.
A: Ashik, thank you for your information which shows that we share many cultural similarities. Ashik, we would like to thank you for your condolences on our General Vo Nguyen Giap’s death, which you said was a huge loss for Vietnam, Asia and the world.
A: General Vo Nguyen Giap, a brilliant disciple of President Ho Chi Minh, was one of the greatest generals of the 20th century. His life was closely associated with the cause of national liberation. His talent and contributions to Vietnam’s struggle for national independence made a hero of General Giap and left an imprint on the history of mankind.
B: Sharing the good impression made by VOV’s programs about General Giap, Enzo Pistone of Italy said he enjoyed listening to our program on October 12 from 19:00 to 19:30 hours UTC on the frequency of 9730 khz. The main part of this program was dedicated to the life of General Vo Nguyen Giap.
A: Enzo wrote: “I have enjoyed listening to your broadcast as it has given me the chance to listen to first-hand news about Vietnam and I was very interested in hearing about General Giap and his life”. Enzo reported that the Voice of Vietnam radio signal received in Genova was very strong. There was no interference from other radio stations and there was only slight background noise and slight propagation disturbances. The overall listening was good.

In an email to us this week, Shri Bhagwan Sharma, our regular listener from India, wrote: “on Monday, September 10, at 16:00 UTC, I listened to my favorite program about the unique tradition of the Co Tu ethnic group’s worshipping of the buffalo, which is strange to us. Both of your programs: Vietnam Discovery and Colorful Vietnam are unique and we get full coverage of Vietnam from you. Thanks for your hard work”.
