In February, when Covid-19 was not yet reported in Ho Chi Minh city, lecturers and students of the city’s University of Technology began building machines that can crank out 90 facemasks a minute. Previous machines could only produce 15 facemasks a minute.

Lac Hong University in the southern province of Dong Nai created hand sanitizers using silver nano technology while Kien Giang College created an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser, non-contact thermometers, and automatic body sanitizing booths. 5 booths have been installed at local administrative offices and several more will be used at the Ha Tien International Border Gate.

Other universities and colleges have produced thousands of liters of hand sanitizing liquid.

It took just one week for 9th grader Nguyen Tuan Linh of Ha An Secondary School in Quang Ninh province to create an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser at a cost of 45 USD.

Linh said: "The plastic hand sanitizer bottles hospitals usually use can easily cause cross-contamination. I created an automatic dispenser that releases hand sanitizing liquid when an infrared sensor detects an obstruction."

Linh’s dispenser works quickly, avoids wasted sanitizer, and can be used with different types of hand sanitizing liquids.

The creativity and social responsibility shown by these young Vietnamese is encouraging others to follow suit and join the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
