According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, fruit and vegetable exports in October alone totaled 961 million USD with durian, mango, jackfruit, banana, pomelo, and coconut being the major earners. Durian, in particular, has affirmed its position as the “star of the sector”. Through October, durian exports had earned 12% more than the 2.85 billion USD earned in the same period last year.
Despite a slowdown early in the year due to new Chinese regulations, exports rebounded strongly in July. In the third quarter, exports earned 1.94 billion USD, up 30.3% year-on-year. A slight dip in October reflected seasonal harvest patterns rather than weakened demand.
In the durian growing area of Cai Lay, Tien Giang province, traders are buying durian for about 4.5 USD per kilogram at farms. Packing facilities are paying 6–6.3 USD per kilogram, twice what they were paying at the beginning of the year.
To ensure quality, cooperatives and enterprises strictly follow safe, clean farming practices, harvest at the right time, and apply rigorous post-harvest inspection and storage methods. These efforts ensure high-quality exports and support sustainable agricultural development.
Tran Thi Anh Thu, Director of the Hong Sang Fruit Company in Cai Lay, said: “We comply with all requirements of partners and export markets. From product testing and selection to freezing, every step is closely monitored to ensure food safety. China remains a highly promising market for Vietnamese durian.”
Adhering to quality standards and export regulations in China and other markets enhances product value and has boosted durian prices and supported the sustainable growth of durian-growing regions. Border forces at international checkpoints are ensuring smooth customs clearance.
Major To Duc Long of the Huu Nghi International Border Gate in Lang Son province said: “The volume of goods, including durian, has increased significantly. We have deployed officers early to ensure swift movement of shipments.”
The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association said Vietnamese businesses, to boost exports and enhance the reputation and competitiveness of Vietnamese durian globally, will continue to diversify markets, increase output, and strengthen quality control and traceability from cultivation area to shipment.
