Vietnamese team tops SEA Games 32 medal tally

(VOVWORLD) - The Vietnamese team has secured first place at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia which ends on Wednesday. Vietnamese athletes won 136 gold medals, 105 silver medals, and 114 bronze medals. The Thai team stands second, Indonesia third, and Cambodia fourth.

SEA Games 32 took place from May 5th to 17th in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, and Kep. The athletes of 11 Southeast Asian countries competed in 37 sports and 586 events. The Vietnamese team’s 700 athletes won 355 medals, successfully defending its top position with 136 gold medals.

Vietnamese athletes won gold medals in events they were competing in for the first time – ouk chaktrang and kun botakor martial art. The women's football team topped the SEA Games for the 4th consecutive time this year.

Dang Ha Viet, Head of the Vietnam Sports Delegation at the 32nd SEA Games, said: “The victory of the Vietnamese female footballers was a highlight in the overall success of the Vietnamese sports delegation. The Vietnamese female footballers did their best for Vietnamese sports.”

Track and field athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh was a star of the 32nd SEA Games, winning gold medals in 4 races: 10,000 m, 5,000 m, 1,500 m and 3,000 m with obstacles. Her gold medals for the 1,500 m and 3,000 m races were won’t just 20 minutes apart.

Oanh said: “When I heard the schedule, I was determined to meet the challenge. I used the most reasonable strategy and did my best to finish.”

Vietnam’s wrestlers won the most medals, with 13 gold. The Vietnamese aerobics team won 5 gold medals. Weightlifter Tran Minh Tri won a gold medal in the men's 67kg category and broke the SEA Games record of 173kg, lifting 176kg. Weightlifter Nguyen Quoc Toan broke the SEA Games record of 150 kg by lifting 155 kg.
