Vietnam - rising Era |
The press serves as an essential foundation of democracy, transparency, and accountability. In the international integration process, Vietnam has emphasized the importance of diversity of voices and open access to information.
Infrastructure for convenient access to information
Since its introduction in Vietnam in 1997, the Internet has become a vital tool for expanding public access to information and has empowered the press to take on a broader role in addressing national socio-economic issues. Luu Vu Hai is former Director of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information under the Ministry of Information and Communications.
"In Vietnam, people can use the Internet conveniently, freely, and at a low cost, which is much better than in many other countries. Vietnam is one of the countries with the fastest growth rate of Internet in the region and ranks among the top globally. The results illustrate the effectiveness of Vietnam’s policies to promote the Internet," said Mr. Hai
Vietnamese media agencies have been creatively applying digital technologies and building communication channels on social platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok. This has helped form a well-informed and engaged community and allows journalists and bloggers to offer their own perspectives on social issues.
Nguyen Duc Loi, Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, said: "In the digital age, the press must actively digitalize and renew its operation to keep pace with new trends. Media agencies should invest heavily in technology, apply AI and big data to improve information quality, and reaffirm their role as trustworthy sources to counter false arguments and misinformation online."
The State has invested in modernizing major media agencies, so they can fulfill their missions in the new era, creating a new space for development, inspiring creativity, removing barriers, and laying a firm foundation for the country to develop.
At the 9th Golden Hammer and Sickle Awards in February 2025, Party General Secretary said: "The press has rekindled the spirit of innovation and social responsibility of all people and truly integrated in social life. It has recommended solutions to address the ‘bottlenecks’ hindering national development."
Major international media organizations have established bureaus in Vietnam and benefit from favorable conditions for their operations. Vietnamese journalists also enjoy opportunities for overseas training and professional exchanges through cooperation frameworks signed with international partners.
Legal framework for press freedom
To foster a more enabling environment for freedom of press, Vietnam is revising its legislation. The next session of the National Assembly in May is expected to discuss the revised Press Law with amendments to ensure a more open regulatory space for media development, encouraging multi-platform, multi-service models, and media economy. It also aims to facilitate innovation to foster the press’s role as a bridge between the Party, the State, and the people.
Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Communication, Education, and Mass Mobilization Nguyen Trong Nghia, said: "Nothing is as equally powerful as the media and the combined power of Industry 4.0, the Internet, and social networks. It’s necessary to promote the power of the media to drive socio-economic goals, promote national solidarity and patriotism, and inspire the will and strength of the Vietnamese people."
In the digital era, information has become a strategic asset. The press plays a vital role in safeguarding the truth, strengthening public trust, fostering a stable business environment, and supporting the country’s path toward comprehensive reform and development. As Vietnam advances toward its goal of becoming a developed nation by the mid-21st century, the press affirms the country’s image as a forward-looking and responsible member of the international community.
