The Party leader’s visit demonstrates Vietnam’s consistent policy of valuing its relationship with Finland, a nation with great potential and a leading position in the EU in innovation, education, green transition, and knowledge-based economy.

Long-standing friendly partners

Vietnam and Finland celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2023. Mr. Lam’s visit will open a new chapter of bilateral cooperation, reaffirm political trust, and strengthen collaboration in traditional fields such as education and training, science and technology, environment, and agriculture, while expanding to new areas like digital transformation, renewable energy, and circular economy.

Over the last 5 decades, Finland has stood side by side with Vietnam in its national development. During the past difficult years, Finland supported Vietnam in many key sectors, including education, clean water, environment, agriculture, and sustainable resource management. The two countries have cooperated closely at multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations and within the frameworks of ASEAN and the EU.

Both nations have successfully transformed their relations from development cooperation to an equal and mutually beneficial partnership, a testament to Vietnam’s remarkable growth and Finland’s long-term, human-centered policy vision.

As both Vietnam and Finland view knowledge and innovation as the driving forces of development, they are working closely in areas such as digital transformation, education, science and technology, and green growth. These sectors will create new momentum for bilateral relations in the era of globalization.

The two countries have recorded fruitful cooperation results in trade and investment, defense and security, education, agriculture, environment, people-to-people exchanges, culture, and tourism.

New prospects

Vietnamese Ambassador to Finland Pham Thi Thanh Binh said General Secretary To Lam’s visit is a politically and diplomatically significant event, marking a new milestone in the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries. Many important activities during the visit will reflect the depth, strategic vision, and comprehensive nature of the bilateral relationship.

Party leader Lam will meet with the Vietnamese community in Finland and Northern Europe, further strengthening the bond between overseas Vietnamese and their homeland. He will also meet with Vietnamese students in Finland, showing the highest-level leadership’s concern for the younger generation.

Mr. Lam’s visit will open a new, more substantive, effective, and sustainable phase of cooperation between the two countries, in line with their spirit of partnership, innovation, and sharing.
