Creating prosperous, equable, progressive, and happy families is one of the aims of national development. But the current international integration in economics, culture, law, and lifestyles is influencing and changing family values and lifestyles in Vietnam.

Promoting family traditions and values is considered a way to ensure the stability of families. Writer Le Hung in Hanoi says the traditions, values and lifestyles of Vietnamese families grow out of the national culture: "In a Vietnamese family, the elders are always role models for other family members and children must respect the elders. While maintaining traditional values, a family still needs to adapt to modern life. The younger generation needs to have their own life goals and directions.”

Eliminating backward customs is another way to ensure stable families. Professor Doctor Trinh Hoa Binh is Director of the Center for Public Opinion at the Academy of Social Sciences: “We need to strengthen family rules to promote the values and ethics of Vietnamese people who are full of love and devotion. It’s also important to disseminate laws and cultural values within each family.”

Relevant agencies are working on a Code of Family Ethics to ensure Vietnamese family stability during international integration. Dang Thi Bich Lien is Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism: "Building prosperous, progressive, equable, and stable families will contribute to reduction of poverty and social problems and inspire enthusiasm among family members.”
