Affirming Vietnams respect for the UN

The UN General Assembly High-level Week from September 22–30 and the 80th session of the UN General Assembly – under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights” – comes at a pivotal moment for renewing global commitment to multilateralism, solidarity, and shared action. President Luong Cuong and leaders and senior officials from 192 other UN member states will attend.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung said that President Luong Cuongs participation in the General Debate of the 80th UN General Assembly demonstrates Vietnams support for multilateralism and its respect for the United Nations.

“This is an opportunity for Vietnam to affirm its active and responsible role in the international community, to express its views and share its development experience, and to propose initiatives and solutions to global issues such as peace, stability, sustainable development, and climate change response,” said Ambassador Dung.

The High-Level Week marks the UN’s 80th anniversary this year and Vietnam celebrates 48 years of UN membership. President Cuong will remind the UN of Vietnam’s journey of international integration, healing the wounds of war, transformation, and strong development, and will call on all nations to uphold the values of peace and undertake bold transformations to build a sustainable future. He will reaffirm Vietnam’s strong support for multilateralism and the UN’s central role in global governance.

Strengthening the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

While in the US, President Cuong will engage in activities related to politics, the economy, technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges to mark the 30th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic normalization and the 2nd anniversary of the Vietnam–US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In the past two years, Vietnam–US relations have seen remarkable progress, said Ambassador Dung.

Mutual respect and interest have been strengthened, reflected in the maintenance and expansion of exchanges at all levels. The Vietnamese leaders and the US President have held numerous meetings and phone calls. Party General Secretary To Lam and President Donald Trump shared four phone calls in recent months. These high-level exchanges have laid a foundation and direction for bilateral relations development across sectors,” he said.

Bilateral economic, trade, and investment ties have grown. Two-way trade continues to rise, with the US – at 99 billion USD – remaining Vietnam’s largest export market. The US has prioritized reciprocal trade talks with Vietnam, and the two have reached a high-level consensus, paving the way for negotiations toward more sustainable and balanced trade.

Vietnam continues to attract investment from American businesses, particularly in technology, energy, and logistics, while an increasing number of Vietnamese businesses are seeking to invest in the US. Cultural and people-to-people exchanges have flourished, and there is a growing Vietnamese community in the US.
