(VOVWORLD) - During Buddha’s birthday (or Vesak) celebration, Vietnam’s vegan food market has seen more diverse products than ever. The vegan trend has spread beyond the Buddhist community to young people and health- and eco-conscious consumers.

Since the beginning of the 4th lunar month, the vegan food market has seen more products in two categories: pre-cooked meals and original ingredients. Plant-based “meat” products simulating roasted chicken, stir-fried beef, grilled meat, and hotpot are popular, but plain ingredients like tofu, mushrooms, vegetables, and grains remain the favorite of people who prefer home cooking.

At markets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the number of people shopping for vegan food surged during Vesak. Two vendors at Tan Dinh Market in Ho Chi Minh City said: “Mushroom sales are much higher than usual. I buy wholesale from a company, so the supply and prices are stable.”

“The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th lunar months are vegan months. I sell more during those times, especially different types of mushrooms.”

Vegan food has also been booming on e-commerce platforms. Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, and others offer vegan ingredients at discounted prices, which has attracted large numbers of young consumers.

Supermarket chains have reported a 20% increase this month in vegan food sales. In addition to fresh vegetables and fruits, big supermarkets like Hapro, Fuji Mart, Co.op Mart, Winmart, and Go! Thang Long offer ready-to-eat vegan dishes like stir-fried noodles, fried tofu, curry, rice, and sour soup for both dine-in and takeout. Big brands like Au Lac, Vissan, and An Nhien Food and green food startups also offer vacuum-sealed or frozen food.

The growing demand for vegan food during Vesak reflects a shift in consumer habits that prioritizes health, convenience, and sustainability. Vegan meals today symbolize a modern lifestyle that balances traditional culture and green consumption.
