(VOVWORLD) - Offshore wind power has become an important pillar in the energy shift of many countries including Vietnam to reduce net emissions. Vietnam is now working on policies and orientations for energy development until 2030 with a Vision to 2045.

In the last 20 years, Vietnam’s power productivity grew 10-12%, much faster than GDP growth. Vietnam identifies energy development as a crucial step to create a firm foundation for socio-economic development and to shift from traditional sources of energy to renewable, clean, and green energy in order to ensure sustainable economic growth and respond to climate change.

With a coastline of more than 3,200 km stretching through 28 cities and provinces, Vietnam is blessed with great offshore wind power potential. Vietnam has invested in transformation and smart regulation. Wind power is expected to become the principal source of Vietnam’s energy in the future. Vietnam has the ambition of becoming a leading nation in the manufacturing and assembling industries in Asia.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Hien, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission, said: "Vietnam has great potential to develop offshore wind power which is the only renewable energy source capable of providing load factors for the system. According to the World Bank, Vietnam has greater potential for wind power than Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand. More than 39% of Vietnam’s total area has an average wind speed of more than 6m/second at the altitude of 65 m, which can produce approximately 512 GW."

With its capacity and experience in building structures and subsidiary systems in the oil and gas sector, Vietnam is capable of developing its offshore wind power sector of supporting industries and logistical services.

Dr. Hien said: "An Electricity of Vietnam report said that as of October 31, Vietnam had grid wind power projects with a total capacity of 4.2 GW. Vietnam now has 35 uncompleted offshore wind power projects with a potential capacity of 60GW. This suggests that Vietnam’s great potential for offshore wind power could meet its future energy needs."

Vietnam is confident it can develop an offshore wind power market with a capacity of 5 to 10 GW that would add 60 billion USD to the economy.

But offshore wind power is a new sector in Vietnam. Vietnam needs to devise support policies and mechanisms coordinated with the national marine strategy to develop offshore wind power capable of competing with other energy sources.
