Surprisingly, Moon Light, a portrayed of black gay life staring black actors and actresses, won Best Picture after La La Land was mistakenly announced by the MC.
Best Director went to 32-year-old Damien Chazelle, who directed the acclaimed American musical romantic comedy-drama La La Land. He is the youngest director to win in the century-old history of the Academy Awards. La La Land’s Emma Stone beat out Isabelle Huppert and Natalie Portman for Best Actress. La La Land also scooped Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song.
As predicted, Casey Affleck won Best Actor, his first win, for his role in Manchester By the Sea.
Viola Davis who played Rose Maxson in Fences won the Best Supporting Actress. The three-time Oscar nominee who grew up in a slum finally won the first trophy of her career. Critics have called Viola’s performance humane and expressive. Accepting her statuette, the black actress slammed racism and expressed her gratitude for art: "We are the only profession which celebrates what it means to live a life."
Best Supporting Actor went to Mahershala Ali for his role as Juan in Moonlight. He is the first Muslim to win an Oscar.
Iran’s The Salesman won Best Foreign Language Film, gaining Iranian director Asghar Farhadi his second Oscar. His film A Separation won four years ago. Both films give a deep insight into contemporary Iranian society. The director did not show up at the award ceremony to protest President Trump’s immigration ban.
