Addressing the opening session, the Vietnamese Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan, who was the President during the previous term, highlighted the role of the SEAMEO Council in boosting regional cooperation in education, science, and culture.

This year’s conference, which also coincides with its 50th founding anniversary, aims to realize the commitment of regional leaders to accelerate the formation of an ASEAN Community in 2015.

During his 3-year term, Luan was assessed to have successfully implemented the approved resolutions and orientations set by the SEAMEO at the strategic dialogue last September and at its congress.

During the first plenary session, Thailand’s Minister of Education Narong Pipatanasai was selected to become the new SEAMEO President.

Established in 1965, SEAMEO, a trans-governmental organization in Southeast Asia has 20 regional centres and a network for conducting its research and training programmes in education, science, and culture.
