Answering reporters’ questions about the inaccurate, biased and unverified information provided by the UN High Commission for Human Rights’ spokesperson on May 13th, Thanh said that international conventions, particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, stipulate that an individual’s right to freedom must be exercised in accordance with the laws and without affecting social security, public order, ethics, or the health of the community, or other individuals’ rights and interests. Therefore, necessary measures taken are in line with Vietnamese laws and international norms to ensure order, security, and safety. Acts that incite violence or cause disorder should be prevented in accordance with the law and for the common interests of the community.

Mr. Thanh said the government, localities, and social organizations are working hard to help local people affected by environmental incidents in Vietnam’s central regions. With the support of partners and foreign scientists, Vietnam is still investigating those incidents and reporting the latest developments in the mass media. Vietnam welcomes the cooperation and support of other countries and international organizations including the UN to help Vietnam deal with this issue in an objective and constructive manner.
