Vietnam now has 34 provinces and cities

(VOVWORLD) -With 96.44% of votes for, National Assembly deputies on Thursday passed the arrangement of provincial-level administrative units in 2025, under which Vietnam will have 34 provinces and cities, including 6 centrally-run cities and 28 provinces.

The National Assembly requested that local governments in the newly established provinces and cities begin operation on July 1, 2025.  

Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Khac Dinh spoke at the National Assembly’s 9th session on Wednesday. “The deputies fully agree with the policy and plan to arrange provincial-level administrative units in 2025. They said this is a very big policy, a major event of the Party and State, with a sacred historical and political significance that history has given the 15th National Assembly deputies the right to vote and pass the Resolution,” Dinh said. 

“The merged provinces will be larger in size, have more diverse natural conditions and resources, and the ability to plan large-scale socio-economic development, attract stronger investment, and reorganize production and service spaces in a reasonable and sustainable manner," Deputy Nguyen Thi Thu Ha representing Quang Ninh province said.

"The reorganization of administrative units will create favorable conditions for restructuring the system of administrative agencies at all levels, improving governance efficiency and service quality for people and businesses. This is also an opportunity to promote institutional reform, fine-tune the model of a streamlined, modern, transparent, and professional local government,” according to Ha. 

According to the newly-approved National Assembly Resolution, Vietnam has 34 administrative units, including 6 centrally-run cities and 28 provinces. Of them, 11 provinces and cities have not been reorganized, including Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Lai Chau, Lang Son, Nghe An, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Son La provinces and Hanoi and Hue cities.
