(VOVworld) - The Universal Periodical Review (UPR) of Vietnam’s human right situation was held at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday. Vietnam’s participation in the event aims to highlight the country’s efforts and achievements in the renewal process to develop democracy and ensure human rights. This also shows Vietnam’s progress in improving external affairs openly and sincerely that are based on cooperation with all countries including those with differences to enhance mutual understanding and share experiences in ensuring human rights. According to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Vietnam has met 80% of the total 123 recommendations that countries raised to Vietnam in the first UPR in 2009. Vietnam was officially elected by the UN General Assembly to become one of the 14 new members of its Human Rights Council. It received a record high of 184 out of 192 votes in favour. Vietnam started to implement the UPR mechanism for the first time in May 2009. Vietnam’s response to UPR recommendations is shown in the country’s efforts in completing the legal systems and policies to protect human rights and rights of vulnerable groups, reduce poverty, develop the economic sustainability, ensure social security,  and improve health care and education.
