(VOVworld) – Vietnam has made efforts to realize its commitments to protecting and promoting its cultural heritage, according to a UNESCO representative. Sun Lei from the UNESCO Office in Vietnam was speaking at a discussion in Hanoi on Monday on how Vietnam has implemented the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage over the past 10 years. She said Vietnam has made concrete contributions to proving that culture both creates momentum and boosts sustainable development in each country. Participants in the discussion, hosted by the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, proposed measures to deal with the current challenges. Nguyen Duc Tang from the UNESCO Hanoi Office suggested strengthening the urgent protection mechanism for those items of intangible heritage facing the highest risks of extinction. According to Tang, it is necessary to encourage and promote community’s involvement in the direct management of intangible heritage, assess the impact of heritage recognition and improve awareness of the implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
