(VOVWORLD) - 2021 is forecast to be another difficult year for Vietnam’s garment and textile industry depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic develops. But the sector has set the target of 39 billion USD export turnover this year.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s report on industrial production and trade in January said that some export sectors such as garment and textile have kept their growth momentum and maintained their production pace from the first month of the year.

Vu Duc Giang, Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, said businesses need to promote Vietnamese branding and supply chain links, and proactively respond to the new situation.

“To make the textile and garment industry successful and sustainable, mechanisms and policies must facilitate the industry to contribute to the national economy, especially creating jobs. Businesses need a sustainable development solution, a greening program, and chain linkage for sustainable development,” said Mr. Giang.

According to Mr. Giang, free trade agreements, especially the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) which has come into effect since August 2020 and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) signed in November 2020 will create more opportunities for Vietnam's textile and garment industry.
