(VOVworld) – APEC’s workshop on community-based disaster risk management opened in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh province on Friday. Themed “Community-based disaster risk management in the context of climate change”, the event drew the participation of nearly 100 delegates from APEC member countries. Deputy Foreign Minister Vu Hong Nam said:
"It’s necessary to raise the community awareness over the issue. Significant effort has been recorded among APEC members, non-governmental organizations, and the international community in addressing and mitigating natural disasters, but this was the first initiative to mobilize the power of the community, which is often the hardest hit by natural calamities."
Delegates discussed measures to improve the community’s capability in climate change mitigation, advanced investment and technology methods, enhance community engagement in social entities, and improve partnerships for sustainable community development.
