Nguyen Trong Thai was born into a poor family in Hai Duong province. To support his family, Thai went to work as a miner in Quang Ninh province.

At first, the work was irregular, so he took a vocational training course at the Viet Xo Friendship Mine Workers School. After graduating, Thai went to work at the Ha Lam Coal Joint Stock Company.

"At first, the salary was low. The work was hard, but at least the job was stable,” said Thai.

Because he was hard-working and creative, after 5 years, Thai was promoted to production leader. His team has always been first in productivity, often completing work ahead of schedule.

Thai has proposed a number of technical initiatives which have improved productivity or profitability, including an air humidifier to reduce dust and an improved drill to work on sloping terrain.

“I’ve learned a lot from Thai. He has showed me many ways to raise productivity,” said Phan Hong Son, one of Thai’s colleagues.

For Thai, uniting all team members toward one goal is the key to success. He has inspired many others, according to Trinh Ngoc Toan, Chairman of Ha Lam Coal Joint Stock Company’s Trade Union.

“Thai is a great role model in the mining sector. His work spirit based on discipline and determination has inspired many other mine workers,” said Toan.

Nguyen Trong Thai was awarded the “Labor Hero in the Renewal Period” title at the 10th National Patriotic Emulation Congress last year.
