The international community welcomed a US-Russia agreement on securing and destroying Syria’s chemical weapons. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the agreement averts the threat of US military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime. He added that the agreement eases the tense situation in the war-torn country. The Arab League said the deal will help the search for a diplomatic resolution to the war. Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Japan welcomes the agreement to put chemical weapons under international supervision. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Germany is ready to give technical support to the process of destroying Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles. Syrian officials had a positive response to the deal. Syrian Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar called the deal a victory that has averted US strikes.
