At the opening ceremony, National Assembly Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Man said peace, independence, and freedom have always been the aspiration of Vietnamese people and the unswerving goal of the Vietnamese revolution.

He expressed the hope that the ongoing meeting will contribute to efforts to prevent conflicts and arms races, eliminate weapons of mass destruction, and promote respect for international law and the UN Charter.

The Assembly, the first ever hosted by Vietnam, is an opportunity for Vietnam to further contribute to world peace and pay tribute to the World Peace Council for its support  over the years.
