The first phase of Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai province near Vietnam’s economic hub HCM city will cost more than 4.6 billion USD and will be ready by 2025.
It will include a 4 km runway, a terminal and facilities capable of serving 25 million passengers and handling 1.2 million tonnes of cargo a year.
“Long Thanh International Airport is among the 16 most anticipated airport projects in the world. It is Vietnam’s most expensive infrastructure project to date and is important for our economic growth and national security. The airport is expected to contribute 3%-5% to Vietnam’s GDP growth,” said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The entire project, when fully operational by 2040, would be able to serve 100 million passengers a year and will cost 16 billion USD to build.
It is strategically located just three hours flight away from South Korea, Japan and China, and it will be able to receive the largest commercial aircrafts.
It is also well linked to all southern localities by a network of highways.
