Canada's Manitoba on Thursday declared a province-wide state of emergency for the second time this year after more than a million hectares of forest burned in wildfires. The number of wildfires continues to rise sharply.

In Syria, some 1,900 families have been directly affected, with thousands more at risk, as wildfires continue to ravage northwestern province of Latakia for an eighth consecutive day. According to the United Nations, the wildfires have caused a rise in humanitarian demands, especially regarding shelter, water, and other essential services.

In Europe, Spain is also facing increasingly frequent and extreme events such as intense heatwaves and especially fierce wildfires driven by rising temperatures. More than 3,300 hectares of forest were burned this week in the northeastern region of Catalonia, just days after 6,000 hectares, mostly farmland, were scorched in the same area.

According to Spain's Ministry of Health, 2,020 people, 90% of them over the age of 75, died from heat-related complications last summer. Experts said climate change will lead to more extreme weather events and force countries to strengthen their capacity and adaptability.
