The virus was first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019. It has since spread across the world killing nearly 2 million people so far, infecting tens of millions and eviscerating the global economy.
The team will spend two weeks in quarantine on arrival and two more weeks interviewing people from research institutes, hospitals and the seafood market in Wuhan where the new pathogen is believed to have emerged.
The WHO team includes virus and other experts from the United States, Australia, Germany, Japan, Britain, Russia, the Netherlands, Qatar and Vietnam.
