WHO: Smoking kills millions each year

(VOVWORLD) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday that smoking is involved in 7 million deaths annually, half of them from heart disease and nearly 900,000 from second-hand smoke exposure.

The organization, marking the World No Tobacco Day on May 31, said the number of smokers has declined since 2000, but too slowly. Douglas Bettcher, Director of the Department for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, said smokers now total 1.1 billion.
