On the Truong Sa archipelago, 64 naval personnel and staff laid down their lives on March 14th 1988 to protect the country’s sovereignty over its sea and islands. On the occasion, the staff of the Vietnamese Women’s Union nationwide made 1000 paper cranes as gifts dedicated to the souls of the fallen soldiers. Chairman of Hai Phong municipal Women’s Union, Do Thanh Le, said: "We, the women on the home front, are very moved to be able to visit the Truong Sa archipelago. We are honored to attend this requiem to commemorate the fallen soldiers and sailors who sacrificed their lives to protect their motherland. We sympathize with the hardship that those on the island have to endure and we’d like to express our sincere thanks. We’ll do our utmost to deserve your sacrifices and contributions."
