(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam has been active in implementing nine recommendations by the European Commission (EC) related to the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing to ensure responsible and sustainable fisheries, said Vietnam’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong.

Mr. Cuong made the statement Monday at a working session with the Directorate of Fisheries to review Vietnam’s response to an EC "yellow card" warning and to prepare for a working trip by an EU delegation to inspect and measure the response.

Contents mentioned in the EC recommendations were included in the revised Law on Fisheries, which will take effect in 2019.  The Directorate of Fisheries set up an IUU office, which collected relevant documents for the working session with the EU delegation from a database on fishing ports and anchorages. Mr. Cuong asked the Directorate to update the Government’s guidelines and fishermen’s activities to encourage the EC to withdraw the yellow card issued in late 2017.
